WHAT IS A FOOD SYSTEM?

A food system is the sum of all activities and elements involved in the production, consumption, and disposal of food.

Why are Food Systems Important?

  • They ensure food security and nutrition for a growing population.

  • They support the livelihoods of all people across the food supply chain - from producer, to consumer, and everyone in between who works to get food on tables!

  • Ideally, they do so in a sustainable way addressing all aspects of the system.

Ideal Food Systems are centered around the following:

  • Are nutrition, health, and safety-driven

  • Productive, efficient, and economically sustainable

  • Environmentally sustainable and climate-smart

  • Inclusive

Community Food System: Community food systems are a type of food system where local farmers, community members, businesses, and consumers work together to create a more sustainable local food economy.
